As Vice President, JD Vance presides over the Senate.

IOW…

HE STILL WORKS WITH SENATOR ALEX PADILLA.

Misnaming the Senator was deliberate & performative ass-hattery meant to demean & dehumanize.

While there is nothing wrong with the name Jose, using the wrong name, and using a common name in Mexico, which would be Joseph if it were an Anglo person, is an insult AND racist.

He is insulting every Hispanic person by using the name Jose as an insult. Not just Alex Padilla. I pray one day we are all comfortable enough to call him Alejandro, which is also a very beautiful name. Like Jose.

I am so proud to be a Californian. So proud of our elected officials who make our state so awesome.

Merritt McKeon - while I agree with almost all of what you said, whatever Mr. Padilla chooses to call himself is his prerogative. It's not necessarily to do with shame or other people's discomfort at his South American name. If he was named Alexander and chose to call himself Alex you wouldn't assume he did so because he felt uncomfortable calling himself by his full name. If his name was James but he went by Jim you wouldn't question it. He strikes me as a confident man, happy in his own skin and rightfully unashamed of his heritage. Vance, on the other hand clearly is not - hence the eye-liner he denies wearing and the endless lies as to what he claims to be. Christian, patriot, heterosexual, it's all lies, because he is full of self loathing. And who can blame him?

I agree, he can call himself Alex, it is also a great name. I was talking about the rest of us, hoping one day we are as comfortable with someone named Mohammad, Jesus, or Charlie, whatever the name is, it’s like the line from the old song, first I look at the person, then I look at the face. I always want to know about names, meanings, and the person. So whether Alejandro or Alex, he is a fine senator and I am so proud to be a Californian with such an awesome senator. But the jerk JD calling him Jose is clearly abusive. That’s not his name.

Usually kids take these names because it’s easier for their American (white) teachers to remember and pronounce. Parents often encourage it. I say this as someone who taught at a predominantly Hispanic Catholic school.

Not saying it’s right. It’s not an excuse just something of an explanation.

It’s tragic Americans are not required to learn Spanish in school.

I have 3 sons with Persian or Arabic names. I do understand. My focus is on how JD Vance is a racist and is demeaning Senator Padilla. My kids who are now adult men, have all chosen to maintain their Persian/Iranian names, and they have experienced some teasing and bullying in school. I don’t mean in any way shape or form to criticize Alex Padilla. He is one of my 2 senators and I think very highly of him, as a man and as a Senator.

To clarify , I never require my students to use names that are “easier”. Some names take practice and extra care (respect) to learn and remember. My students are high school age, and it was the parents (most of them immigrants) who urged American names on them (Alex as opposed to Alejandro, for example, or Maggie as opposed to Margarita). I now teach many Indian, Asian, Iranian students who have Persian names and some have shortened their names but not most. One girl has an Asian name but goes by Andrea, another goes by Lillian. This is how I was introduced to them—I would happily learn and use their chosen names.

An Andrea myself, I have had teachers and bosses call me “Andy” because it’s “easier to remember “. I don’t really mind? But then I’m a white.

I have a gender neutral name, Merritt, and as a lawyer I often get letters from other lawyers addressing me as “Mr. McKeon.” Sometimes I keep it up because frankly, many lawyers treat me with more respect when they think I am a man, which clearly, I am not. I usually just correct them if they don’t seem like complete Neanderthal types, names are important to self esteem and identity. I am glad you are sensitive for your students, and hope it helps everyone you touch, with your work.
